Ceremony of the National Awardsof Highest energy efficiency products- 2020

On December 22, 2020, the Ministry of Industry and Trade held the award ceremony for "Highest Energy Efficiency Productsin 2020". Attending the ceremony were Mr. Phuong Hoang Kim - Director of the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development (DEESD, MOIT), Mr. Do Huu Hao - Chairman of Vietnam Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency Association (VECEA), members of the Technical Council, Judges ofthe competition, representatives of professional associations in the energy sector, award-winning enterprises and a large number of press and television news agencies to report the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Phuong Hoang Kim - Director of the DEESD said: "To speed up the transformation of energy efficiency in the market through shortening theperformance standards amendment interval to every year, as opposed to5-year periodic revision as before,and implementDecision No. 280/QD-TTg approving the National Energy Efficiency Program in the period of 2019 - 2030, the Ministry of Industry and Trade organizes the Highest Energy Efficiency Products Award in 2020. The program's goal is to lead the energy efficiency market, create a driving force to encourage competition among enterprises in improving production technology, bringing to market increasingly higher energy efficiency products. Through labeling program forHighest energy efficiency products, the actual performance standard on the market will be consistently established over time instead of the revision every five years as before".

According to Mr. Phuong Hoang Kim, the products participating in the Award are selected according to the following criteria: (i) Products that are being widely used in the market; (ii) Products thatconsume large amounts of energy in production and business processes; (iii) New technology products with great potential to improve efficiency or reduce energy consumption.

The award also contributes to praising businesses that are supplying highest energy efficiency products to the Vietnamese market, thus encouraging the consumption of green and less energy-intensive products.

Despite being organized under the complicated situation of Covid-19 pandemic and social distancing directives of the Prime Minister, after 4 months of competition, the Award Organizer received hundreds of applications from many prestigious businesses and brands such as Daikin, Panasonic, Rang Dong, etc. The products participating in the Awards are diverse in categoriessuch as air conditioners, LED lighting, washing machines, refrigerators etc.Carefully prepared documentsshow that enterprises were remarkably interested in the Award.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade had chaired and coordinated with the Vietnam Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency Association (VECEA) to establish the Technical Council and the Panel of Judges. The Technical Council is responsible for advising the Ministry of Industry and Trade in the development and promulgation of regulations and award criteria, as well asreviewing the report on contest results made by the judges.

The Panel of Judges consists of members who are experts, representatives of research institutions, universities and related professional associations. Based on the standards of related products and equipment, the judges evaluate the means, equipment and products registered in the competition.

According to the Regulation of the Highest Energy Efficiency Products Award, participationwas voluntary. The criteria on energy efficiency, accounting for 50% of the score, were built upon the basis of the National Standards of Vietnam (TCVN). Products awarded highest energy efficiency in this year, in addition to meeting the performance criteria, must also satisfy the criteria of environmental protection and sustainable development in the direction of circular economy. Accordingly, it is important to enhance social responsibility of enterprises such as the use of environmentally friendly raw materials and fuels, the ability to recover, reuse, and reduce wastes in the disposal process at the end of product life cycle, etc.

For each winning product, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will issue a Certification of the Highest Energy Efficiency Product and a QR code to distinguish it from conventional energy saving products on the market. The Highest Energy Efficiency label will be accompanied by a QR code on the surface of the product to help consumers easily identify and look up product information by mobile devices.

The pervasiveness of the 2020 Highest Energy Efficiency Product Award will be enormous. The Award will blow heat into the market in 2021. According to the information about the changes in energy efficiency of products on the market in 2021, the performance of new products will increase 110% to nearly 135% in comparison with that of products being in the market between 2016 and 2020.

Next Awardin 2021 is forecastedas a fierce race between big enterprises to assert the position in the market.

As the Highest Energy Efficiency Award will be held annually, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is planning to implement this activity for the year 2021.
